Where to start with all the amazing learning that year 1 have been busy with this half term?! All of the children, both in school and remote learners on Google Classroom, have amazed all of the year 1 staff for the past 6 weeks.
Our core text this half term has been Grandad’s Island by Benji Davis. We did lots of work about the characters and the story, and then wrote our own Grandad’s Island story. Using talk 4 writing, the children have done so well and are such wonderful authors! They have been using lots of year 1 targets such as: capital letters, finger spaces, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, using and but and because too.
Linking our English learning with art, they have been working on different drawing techniques and have drawn their own rainforest and orangutan pictures. We also used a tutorial from Benji Davis to draw our own Syd and Grandads.
In science, we have been looking at animals, and classifying them using scientific words such as: mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, amphibians, herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
Our Global Theme this half term has been Globalisation and Interdependence, we looked at what is happening in the rainforests in order to produce palm oil. We discovered that many orangutans are losing their homes as they are chopped down to plant palm trees. When we looked in our homes for products including palm oil we were all shocked! This has led to many children creating posters and discussing palm oil with local shopkeepers, it has been wonderful to see the passion from the children with wanting to save the orangutans and the rainforests.
Thank you to all of the fantastic parents and carers who have supported our wonderful pupils and us during online learning. We are so proud of you year 1, keep up the good work.
