As part of our new topic, ‘Julia Donaldson’ small groups of Reception children ventured down to the ‘Deep, Dark, Woods’ to have a real-life experience of a woodland setting. As we are building up to read the story, ‘The Gruffalo’ we wanted to visit a setting similar to the one in the story to try to engage the children further. We used our senses to explore what we could see, hear, touch and smell as well as discovering lots of minibeasts. The children fully enjoyed creating tree rubbings as well as ending our visit by listening to a Julia Donaldson story.
