During the school day on Friday 25th January, Park Girl’s Football Team got the chance to leave school just before dinner time to go to Fleetwood training ground and take part in The Lancashire Danone Cup Finals.

Our Girls started the tournament in the group stages where we played three teams.
Our first match was against St Mary’s, which started off with a bang – a 2-1 win for Park!
The second game didn’t really go our way with a 1-0 defeat by Burscough, but we did not let that dampen our spirits – in our last game against Bowerham the girls triumphed with a 1-0 win for Park. We finished 2nd in our group which meant we made it to the Cup Quarter-Finals.

In the Quarter’s we came up against the 1st Team from Group 4, Wellfield. What a tough game this was for Park finishing 0-0. This meant we had to take part in a penalty shoot out to determine the winners.
Leah took the first penalty and smashed it into the back of the net. Scarlett took the second penalty but Wellfield’s keeper saved it! It was a nail biting 1-1 on penalties … last one, Tia, was up … Wellfield had missed so the pressure was on but … GOAL! Park had made it through to the Semi-Finals.

We came up against Peel Park in the Semi’s – now this was a challenging game for us!
We led by one goal to nil throughout the first half, however in the second half of the game Peel Park equalised. Another penalty shoot out!
The tension was unbelievable! The first 3 players from both teams took their shot – nobody scored! We moved to sudden death. Both teams went through every single player and nobody managed to find the back of the net, until our very own Sugra (the last player to take a penalty) had a shot and … GOAL!!! We were through to the Final!

The Final was the hardest game of them all; we ended up against the first team that we had played in the group stages – St Mary’s. It was late and the girls were tired, but they still battled through. Both teams used every last bit of energy they had. St. Mary’s finally clinched victory with a single goal in the last five minutes of the game.

Our Park girls finished in 2nd place out of 18 teams in Lancashire! What super stars!

A massive well done to all of the schools that took part and an even bigger well done to our Park Girl’s Football Team! I think it’s safe to say you made us all proud with your brilliant performance! A big thank you also goes to Mr Byrom for all his help during the day.
