Welcome to

Mrs Farry's Class 6F

Mr D. Farry

year6b-2-smallYear 6 is a very important year for your children – the culmination of all the hard work they have done in primary school. Come in and have a look, hopefully you will find lots to interest you.

  • Find out what your children are up to in class.
  • Look at pictures of school trips and events.
  • Celebrate the work we do.
In this section you will find more detailed overview documents that you may download. The documents tell you about the exciting topics the children will be learning about on a term by term basis.

By Y6 it is important that children are well on the way to being fluent readers, able to tackle a wide range of texts. Children who have not yet arrived at an appropriate level of fluency will need extra support both in school and at home. It is vital that they leave us as competent readers as this is so important to their future learning.

In Year 6 we do not want our children to “judge a book by its cover” and actively encourage them to read a range of different books, including ones which they may not be initially drawn to. In so doing we hope to stimulate their imagination and improve their comprehension.

Children will be given regular opportunities to read texts of their choice in the classroom and the expectation is that they will read at least four times a week at home – this can be reading to an adult or reading independently depending on the child’s level of fluency and understanding.

At the end of Year 6 all children will sit the government’s reading test which will cover skills such as: explaining meanings of words; retrieving information; summarising ideas; making inferences and predictions; and commenting on the author’s choice of language and how it is presented.

year6b-4-smallThe more children read, the more they collect in their toolkit for writing; therefore our writing tasks are usually linked to books we are reading in class. They will cover a range of text types and link to other topics being taught in school e.g. Science, History, Geography and R.E. In Year 6 there is a greater focus on independent writing and children are encouraged to take inspiration from texts they have read and enjoyed. Through their writing they will showcase their imagination and communication skills using:

    • a wide range of punctuation to clarify meaning
    • a variety of sentence structures
    • carefully selected vocabulary

Correct use of grammar will continue to be taught and embedded in the children’s writing.

Each week we will celebrate our children’s writing by selecting two “Writers of the Week”. These children will then have their work published on the Pobble website so their work can be shared.

Spelling test words are given out at the beginning of the week and tested by means of dictation on Fridays.

Each week children will be provided with a spelling list giving example words for a particular letter string, spelling rule or word part. These will be worked on in school but should also be learnt at home.

By the end of Year 6 children are expected to be able to spell all of the key words set out in the National Curriculum. See attached lists.

These are statutory word lists provided by the government and children must learn to read and spell the words below. Pupils in Year 6 need to revise and know spelling lists from year 3 through to Year 6!

year6b-7-smallThe national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

    • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
    • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
    • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions. Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently

By the end of year 6, pupils should be fluent in written methods for all four operations, including long multiplication and division, and in working with fractions, decimals and percentages. (National Curriculum)

In order to achieve these expectations children need to be able to recall all times tables and related division facts to 12 x 12 as well as have a secure knowledge of number bonds. Such skills will be practised in school on a daily basis and children will be expected to practise them at home. This can be done in a variety of ways, including:

At the end of the year children will be expected to sit an arithmetic test and two reasoning papers as part of their SATs.

Each week children will be expected to:

    • practise and learn their spellings
    • read (at least four times a week)
    • practise and learn times tables facts (x and ÷)
    • complete any other work which is sent home to consolidate / prepare for work in class
    • complete tasks sent home in preparation for SATs
