Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

At Park our aims within teaching Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) are:

  • To foster an interest in learning other languages;
  •  To introduce young children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun;
  •  To make young children aware that language has a structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another;
  •  To help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries;
  •  To develop their speaking and listening skills;
  •  To lay the foundations for future study.
  • KS2 children have a regular thirty minutes lesson of modern foreign language a week, in order to ensure progression and skills development.

Teaching and Learning

Within Park Primary, the Modern Foreign Language that is taught is French. The curriculum that is followed is based on the guidance given in the revised National Curriculum.   MFL is delivered through an interactive Scheme of Work– Language Angels.  Lesson outlines and practical classroom activities are provided to support teaching. The Scheme of Work is fully mapped to the KS2 Programme of Study for foreign languages — with each PoS statement broken down into measurable Learning Outcomes for each year.

The Scheme is split into 3 phases at Key Stage 2, focusing on:
